Conversation Starters
Invite conversations, don't cut it off. Think about your immediate response to your child. Does it encourage conversation or show you aren't listening or don't take her seriously?
Try to get rid of distractions, move down on her level and look her in the eye.
Listen to the endless descriptions and details of older children about who did what, what happened, and when.

Make it possible for kids to talk. Everyone needs to feel comfortable and relaxed to talk or ask questions. Be sure there is plenty of time for you and your child so you can talk without being rushed. It is often when things are most casual or unplanned that kids talk. Try bath time, bedtime, riding on the bus or in the car, or mealtime. Your child and you will learn the best times for you both.
